Mercado Libre in Mexico: fees, duties, and market entry

The second-largest market in the region. Here Mercado Libre has a serious competitor — Amazon — so the choice of platform has to be calculated, not assumed.

What to watch out for

Open sources disagree on how many tiers the fixed fee has in Mexico: some versions list two thresholds, others three. Before running a calculation we check the current schedule in the seller dashboard — a one-tier difference shifts the margin on a low-priced item by several percentage points.

How we work in this country

Entry route

The fastest route is Partnership: our company imports and sells the goods, and you do not need a legal entity. If the market takes off, we open a company in your name.

Logistics

We pick up the cargo at your supplier, ship it, clear customs, and put it in the warehouse. You choose the product and the supplier.

What you need to know about entering Mercado Libre in Mexico

Mexico is Mercado Libre's second-largest market and the most interesting country for anyone selling mid- and high-priced goods. The fee here starts at 8% — the lowest of the six countries — and VAT is 16%, also the lowest in the set. A free-shipping threshold of MXN 299 (about $17) means low-priced goods are better sold in bundles, pushing the order value above the threshold.

The main feature of Mexican customs is free-trade agreements: about 90% of imports come in at a zero duty rate. But in 2025–2026 the rates on textiles, footwear, auto parts, and plastic goods were raised, and those categories have to be calculated separately. The tariff code determines the rate, so we verify the classification before the cargo ships.

We do not have our own team in Mexico: we open the company for the project and run operations remotely through local contractors — warehouse, customs broker, and buyer support. It is a workable setup, but it takes a longer start than Argentina, and we build that into the timeline when planning the first batch.
